Welcome to the Centre for Egypt and Middle East Studies (CEMES) at Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ»ÆƬ. The Centre’s mission encompasses the broader Middle East region, with a primary focus on Egypt its studies, projects, and collaborations with relevant organisations in fields such as investment, business, and industry. CEMES also plays a key role in expanding the University’s international engagement and global connectivity. To support these goals, the Centre regularly organises workshops, academic conferences, and lecture series.
Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ»ÆƬ CEMES
The Centre for Egypt and Middle East Studies (CEMES), founded in 2014, reflects Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ»ÆƬ’s mission to be a Centre of Excellence, a hub for advanced research, and a distinguished platform serving both Egyptian society and the international community.
CEMES provides a vital space for the University and its student body to engage directly with prominent international speakers who address a diverse range of regional and global issues. Through public lectures, dedicated workshops, and specialised conferences, students are exposed to pluralistic, thought-provoking perspectives. The planning and moderation of these events including the preparation of summaries and formal conference reports are entrusted to students, offering them a unique hands-on training experience that strengthens their academic profiles and enhances employability.
In line with its academic vision, the Centre targets pressing regional topics, practical research areas, and rigorous theoretical paradigms. It introduces students to a broader world of knowledge exchange, capacity building, and training programmes. These opportunities are made possible through the implementation of various Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs), particularly through initiatives such as our summer training programme at the League of Arab States (LAS), and student participation in international forums including the Amman International Colloquium, the Frankfurt Peace Institute, the Union for the Mediterranean, the Arab Parliament, and the Bulgarian Institute for Foreign Affairs.
CEMES also plays a key role in strengthening the international profile of the University through the signing of twinning and protocol agreements with regional and international institutions. The Centre maintains strong links with the diplomatic community in Egypt and regularly collaborates with foreign embassies. For instance, through its close relationship with the Chinese Embassy in Cairo, the Centre supported the establishment of the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ»ÆƬ Science Park and facilitated the introduction of Chinese language courses in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities.
Importantly, the Centre has joined the Arab Network for Regional Security and Non-Proliferation, a League of Arab States–recognised body comprising 30 Arab research institutes. This affiliation underscores the Centre’s credibility and regional standing.
Finally, CEMES serves as a bridge between the University and the diplomatic corps, actively supporting Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ»ÆƬ’s participation in cultural, educational, and social events that uphold and promote the University’s international visibility and esteemed reputation.
CEMES also publishes the CEMES E-Journal, a quarterly academic publication featuring contributions from global thought leaders and scholars on pressing international issues. The journal is widely read and serves as essential assigned reading for Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ»ÆƬ students. Being available online, it extends the Centre’s impact to a global student audience.
