Farouk El-Baz Centre for Sustainability and Future Studies

Message From The Director

When I first started working at Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ»ÆƬ in 2008, I proposed the idea of establishing a centre for sustainability and future studies at the University. At that time, the sustainable development system was not as clear as it is now. After the United States conference in September 2015, and the Climate Change Conference in Paris in November 2015, the President of the University told me that I should start the unit as a part of the department, then depending on the achievements of the unit, the University will discuss whether It is necessary to establish the centre or not.

Therefore, the Sustainable Future Medium Cities Conference in November 2010 was a futuristic vision for sustainable development, which could be currently, included in the necessary studies and research that Egypt needs in the self-building stage however; it was not made use of as it should have been.
The conference was connected to a competition for the sustainable future of medium cities, and the ideas and scenarios of the 3 axes from the proposed passage of development and reconstruction, for the renowned scientist Farouk Al Baz.

Then, there was the revolution. Along with establishing the entre in March 2011, there was the Taking Leave competition. Searching for the builders of the future Egypt, before thinking about building the future Egypt. It resulted in 35 new points that accept the livelihoods in 95% of Egypt’s desert, to be a developmental sustainable dimension for Egypt’s narrow valley which is limited to only 5% of its land.

The proposed scenarios gave space for seminars and conferences in Universities all over Egypt, and the world, and for a new way of thinking, and writing the history of the future. The centre and The British University’s vision became published, and participated in a lot of conferences, In China, Korea, Texas US, England, Italy, Germany, Jordan, Syria, UAE, Amman, and all of the universities in Egypt.

Then it was the stage to start cooperating with the important institutions, and the engineers syndicate in Hope and Work Olympics, to build the Suez Canal Region’s people and societies. It resulted in ideas and scenarios that assure the sustainable development dimension, and it was published in several scientific magazines and in the media. Today the centre and The British University hold the responsibility of raising a few national issues including:

• The conference of Sustainable Mega Projects: (Chance -Change-Challenge).

• The rights of Intellectual property of the Egyptian heritage issue, before those who benefit from our heritage in the whole world.

• participation in the celebration of the 50 years anniversary, since moving the temples of Abu Simbel.

• The attempt to employ science, scientific research, and Graduation projects in dealing with the challenges of our national issues, as well as the thinking of sustainable development.

The journey has begun, but it still needs a lot of effort to elevate Egypt, and our University takes sustainability into account and recognizes the value and importance of future studies.

The Farouk El-Baz Centre of Sustainability and Future Studies as a Research and Development (R&D) Centre has emerged as an important part of the University's efforts to address future sustainability in terms of environmental, economic, and social challenges through the engagement of students, academic staff and researchers. The FECSFS is envisioned to propose a suite of  comprehensive solutions that tackle the future from a sustainable point of view. This is achieved through training and education, research, seminars, workshops, conferences, consultancy and publications. Farouk El-Baz Centre of Sustainability and Future Studies focuses its efforts on establishing a data bank for innovative and visionary ideas. It also supports future studies in different fields such as urban development and future architecture. In addition, it implements GIS in documentation and decision support. The Centre will consist of five units:

1. Innovation, Creativity and Bank of Ideas Unit.

2. Research and Scientific Studies Unit.

3. International Cooperation GIS and Decision Support Unit.

4. Farouk El-Baz Young Generation Forum Unit.

5. Culture of Sustainability Unit.

Overview & Mission

Annual report of CSFS

Built on the expertise of its academic community and strengthened through collaboration with national and international researchers, the research centres at Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ»ÆƬ (Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ»ÆƬ) have become key hubs for innovation and knowledge creation. These centres have successfully attracted research funding and produced high-quality publications across various fields.

Between 2006 and 2015, Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ»ÆƬ established ten specialised research centres covering diverse disciplines, including engineering, informatics, pharmaceuticals, and more.

In line with the University’s commitment to sustainable development, the concept for the Centre for Sustainability and Future Studies was introduced in 2008. Initially launched as a unit within the Department of Architecture, the Centre gained momentum following the Future Intermediate Sustainable Cities Conference held in November 2010. As a result, it was formally established as a Centre in March 2011.
