Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ»ÆÆ¬ Joins EU-Funded SWAMED Project to Tackle Water Scarcity in Mediterranean Agriculture

SWAMED: Sustainable Water Management for Smart Agriculture in Mediterranean Regions

Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ»ÆÆ¬ (Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ»ÆÆ¬) is proud to announce its participation as a key partner in SWAMED – Sustainable Water Management for Smart Agriculture in Mediterranean Regions, a newly launched international research initiative co-financed by the European Union under the INTERREG NEXT MED 2021–2027 Programme.

With a total project budget of €2.74 million, 89% of which is funded by the EU, SWAMED is set to address one of the most critical challenges facing the Mediterranean region today: water scarcity, driven by climate change, prolonged droughts, and increasing demand for agricultural productivity.A Collaborative Mediterranean Effort

The SWAMED project is coordinated by the University of Campania “Luigi Vanvitelli” (Italy), in collaboration with prestigious partners across the Mediterranean, including:

  • CRTEAN – Regional Center for Remote Sensing of North African States (Tunisia)
  • Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ»ÆÆ¬ (Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ»ÆÆ¬) (Egypt)
  • Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH) (Greece)
  • Alanya Alaaddin Keykubat University (ALKU) (Turkey)

 

Associated partners include the Alanya District Directorate of Agriculture (Turkey) and the Higher School of Engineers of Medjez El Bab (Tunisia).

Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ»ÆÆ¬’s Role in Advancing Smart Water Solutions

As part of this transnational initiative, Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ»ÆÆ¬ will lead key research and pilot activities in Egypt, aimed at developing a Decision Support System (DSS) for efficient irrigation in agriculture. The project adopts a multi-stakeholder approach, involving farmers, water authorities, and research institutions to co-design and implement solutions that are technologically advanced yet adaptable to local needs.

Through field testing, stakeholder engagement, and capacity-building activities, Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ»ÆÆ¬ will contribute to the development of sustainable, data-driven water management practices tailored to Egypt’s agricultural context.

 

Project Objectives and Expected Outcomes

Over the next three years, SWAMED will deliver:

  • A cutting-edge Decision Support System (DSS) for irrigation optimization
  • Pilot implementation in four countries: Egypt, Tunisia, Turkey, and Greece
  • Training programs, workshops, and participatory focus groups
  • Communication materials and outreach campaigns
  • A long-term sustainability and exploitation plan for regional adoption

“SWAMED represents a concrete step toward a more resilient and sustainable Mediterranean agriculture,” said Prof. Luigi Zeni, Project Coordinator. “By combining advanced technology and stakeholder participation, we aim to improve water use efficiency, reduce waste, and protect vital natural resources.”

Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ»ÆÆ¬ will soon announce opportunities for local stakeholders to engage in project activities, including workshops, training sessions, and surveys. This presents a valuable platform for Egyptian farmers, policymakers, and researchers to contribute to – and benefit from – regional knowledge exchange and innovation in sustainable water management.
