Employability as a Core Role of Higher Education

We are pleased to announce that the third Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ»ÆƬ Teaching and Learning Symposium, organised by the Faculty of Art and Design under the auspices of the Office of the Provost, will be on 1st October 2024.

This year’s theme is ‘Employability as a Core Role of Higher Education.’ In recent years, the concept of employability has garnered significant attention within the realm of higher education. It has become increasingly clear that higher education serves not only as a pathway to knowledge, but also as a vital instrument for fostering successful personal and career trajectories post-graduation.

The symposium aims to review and synthesise case studies from various academic disciplines, presenting arguments both in favour of and against the adoption of employability as a core purpose or value of higher education. We will share best practices and techniques to enhance employability within the curriculum and explore teaching and learning in a broader context.

Additionally, the symposium will highlight industry engagement and the civic mission of higher education institutions, examining their impact on employability. Participants will engage in discussions regarding the origins and meanings of the term ‘employability’ as both a tool and an end goal, its practical applications, and the various issues and debates it has generated.

We invite all University staff and students to join us for this important event. Your participation will contribute to a rich dialogue on the role of employability in shaping the future of higher education.
